Wojciech Szczesny

Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny justified Arsene Wenger’s faith during his first full season as Arsenal’s No 1.
The imposing shot-stopper was ever-present in the Gunners’ Premier League campaign, keeping 13 clean sheets, and produced a string of performances that showed maturity beyond his years.

His stand-out display was a superb performance in the 2-1 win at Anfield on March 3, when he made a fantastic double save from a Dirk Kuyt penalty. A vital penalty save in the Champions League qualifier against Udinese was another highlight. There were many other impressive showings, though, and he demonstrated a knack for staying alert and snuffing out opposition opportunities.
A confident figure who communicates well, Wojciech joined the Gunners’ academy from hometown side Legia Warsaw in 2006. Rising through the ranks, he came to prominence in a loan spell with Brentford in 2009/10, shortly after making his Arsenal debut in a Carling Cup win over West Bromwich Albion.
He made his Premier League debut at Old Trafford in December 2010, and has been virtually impossible to dislodge since.
Son of former Polish international keeper Maciej Szczesny, Wojciech made his own debut for Poland against Canada in October 2009. He began their Euro 2012 campaign in goal, but a red card in their first match against Greece ended his tournament prematurely.
